Topeka mayor says staffers had unauthorized meeting about data center
Topeka Mayor Spencer Duncan says he learned two staff members participated in an unauthorized meeting to discuss Compass Datacenters , a hyperscale data center company looking to develop just outside city limits. Duncan said interim city manager Michael Webb is addressing the protocol violation. Duncan said two staff members on Oct. 30 met with a legal representative and several board members of Rural Water District 3. He didn't identify the staff members. "The employees attended without notifying the city manager’s office, my office, City legal counsel or members of the City Council," he said in a written statement. "Their participation was not authorized by management or elected officials. Had I been informed of the request, I would have directed these issues be brought to the governing body through our established process and the meeting not be held. "This meeting did not meet the expectations we have established for handling matters involving data centers." Mayor reiterates the existence of a data center moratorium Duncan reiterated the city's moratorium and said discussions related to data centers must be brought before the governing body.
