Towing fees for companies on city’s rotation list increased

The Oxford Board of Aldermen approved a bump Tuesday in the amount towing companies on the city’s towing rotation can charge.

Last month the board approved a new ordinance for towing companies to help end “predatory towing practices” that included new regulations, requirements and a maximum amount companies can charge people whose cars they have towed off private property.

Those fees were higher than what the city allowed companies on its rotation list to charge when the city needed to call a towing company after a wreck or for a car parked illegally on city property.

The city contracts with local towing companies that are put on a rotation list for when they are called. Currently, Shivers Towing and Chandler Towing are on the rotation list.

During their regular meeting Tuesday, the board approved adjusting the rotation fees to allow companies to charge up to $250 for towing and up to $45 for a per-day storage fee if the vehicle is not picked up within 24 hours of being towed. The fees currently were $200 to tow and $30 for storage per day.

The towing companies could charge up to an extra $100 if the vehicle being towed was involved in a wreck where extra equipment was needed or required an extended amount of time or manpower to complete the tow. That was not changed in the vote on Tuesday.
