Oxford, AL – Leaders representing faith, business, and government sectors will unite with citizens of Oxford and communities across the nation to observe the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 2nd. The ceremony is slated to commence at noon in front of Oxford City Hall, situated at 145 Hamric Drive East.

The National Day of Prayer holds deep historical significance, dating back to its inception in 1952 through a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress and subsequent signing into law by President Harry S. Truman. Initially observed on different dates, the observance was officially designated to the first Thursday in May by President Ronald Reagan, a tradition that has persisted, marked by presidential proclamations each year since.

Mayor Alton Craft expressed his reverence for the occasion, remarking, “This is always a special day for me.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing the blessings bestowed upon the city of Oxford, acknowledging that despite challenges, the protection and providence offered by a higher power should be acknowledged and appreciated. Craft underlined the significance of the phrase “In God We Trust,” noting that for the citizens of Oxford, it transcends being merely a national motto to embody a way of life.

The commemoration of the National Day of Prayer serves as a poignant reminder of the values of unity, faith, and gratitude, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to reflect on shared blessings and aspirations.

The ceremony in Oxford symbolizes a collective expression of hope and resilience, emphasizing the importance of spiritual guidance and communal solidarity in navigating the challenges of contemporary society.

As leaders, citizens, and communities converge to observe this venerable tradition, the National Day of Prayer continues to serve as a testament to the enduring significance of faith and its role in fostering a sense of belonging and purpose within the fabric of American society. All are invited to join in this event.
