UPDATE: Chief Rousseau has made a second update on the social media post : Update #2: The log has been located! Case closed! Thank you all for the tips!

UPDATE: A man with a blue Ford tractor was seen strapping down the log just before 4 p.m. on Thursday. “Please check your cams and message them to me,” said Chief Rousseau.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Are you the person who took a large maple log that didn’t belong to you from North Main Street in Ovid?

If so, Chief of Police Lisa Rousseau wants you to step forward, so she doesn’t have to hunt you down.

“Charges will not be sought if the log is returned immediately,” Rousseau said in a social media post Friday afternoon . “Or, you may call me, and advise that the log will be returned, and no charges will be sought. This must occur within the next 24 hours.”

Otherwise, Rousseau plans to seek out residential video footage to find the log-rolling culprit.

A large maple tree had been cut down on the 300 block of North Main Street–and between 12-4:30 p.m. on Thursday, someone took the leftover maple log without permission to do so.

“We have opened a theft investigation,” Rousseau said in Friday’s post. “…If you are the person that took it, please call me asap at 989-668-1336.”

Though it may seem possible that the carrying away of the log was a misunderstanding–“Keep in mind…in theft cases, the value of the log determines if this is a misdemeanor or felony,” Rousseau said.

“If I find you before you call me, chances of me seeking charges against you went up by 99%,” she said.
