Just two months after Utah-based Hawaiian restaurant Mo’ Bettahs closed its south Overland Park spot, a coffee chain has applied to move in.

151 Coffee, a drive-thru Dallas chain, has filed a permit to open a location at 12005 Metcalf Ave., according to city documents.

The coffee company is already in the process of opening another at 91st Street and Metcalf. Michael Wattles, vice president of finance for 151, said they expect that location will open in June.

Texas-based 151 Coffee will open in the Kansas City area soon, the company says. 151 Coffee

Serving hot and iced lattes, smoothies, energy drinks and more, 151 opened its first location in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2017. The 91st Street spot will be its first outside Texas.

Specialty coffees include its cinnamon dulce, Snickers, and white chocolate macadamia lattes. Milk is steamed to exactly 151 degrees, just like its name.

In October, the company told The Star that it was looking to expand in Kansas, potentially opening one in Manhattan, as well.

Mo’ Bettahs had been open for less than a year in the 12005 Metcalf spot before it closed. In a written statement, Mo’ Bettahs said it made a “market evaluation” and decided to relocate to a digital kitchen near downtown at 1600 Campbell St.

It has another location nearby at 7006 W. 75th St.

Mo’ Bettahs opened its first area location in August 2022, serving customizable plates with white rice, grilled meat and macaroni salad.

Local rival Hawaiian Bros opened in Belton in 2018 and has restaurants nationwide.
