TCU School Board votes to close Le Center Primary building
The Tri-City United School Board voted Sept. 28 to close the TCU Le Center Primary building, citing the cost of maintaining the facility and the expense of bringing the aging building into compliance with modern accessibility requirements. The building, located at 160 Mill Ave. in Le Center, will be closed to people under the plan recommended by the district’s Finance and Facilities committees. Kevin Babcock, speaking to the board, said the building currently costs the district between $80,000 and $100,000 a year simply to keep it heated, despite having no regular school programming inside. Under the closure plan, the district would reduce the building’s heat to a temperature sufficient to maintain the facility and shut off its water. Babcock said one of the building’s boilers also is not currently functioning. “We have a boiler that’s not working currently,” Babcock said, explaining that the building has a central boiler located near the middle of the facility and the small gym. The district has been working to determine how activities and programs currently using the building could be accommodated elsewhere. Youth wrestling, which had practiced in the Le Center building on Monday evenings, will move its practices to the TCU high school.
