The Beaver Island Birding Trail's annual Birding Foray. The Beaver Island Birding Trail celebrates its annual Birding Foray May 24-26. The weekend consists of multiple field trips—think McCauley’s Point, Little Sand Bay Preserve, and Gull Harbor—alongside presentations from birding experts like Darrell Lawson, vice president of the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society, who will be talking about identifying waterbirds in flight. When you’re out on the field, you can expect to see everything from common loons and Caspian terns to wood warblers and indigo buntings. Beaver Island Community Center serves as the main hub for the foray in between adventures. Each field trip comes with a $30 price tag (which includes transportation), while the featured presentations are free to the public with a suggested donation of $5-$15. Mackinaw City man arrested for home invasion of neighbor, police say
MACKINAW CITY — The Mackinaw City Police Department said Monday that a 39-year-old man from Mackinaw City has been arrested on home invasion charges. On Saturday, May 11, around 5:15 p.m., officers were sent to a residence in regards to a male allegedly making threats to harm others in the residence after a verbal altercation, police said. One of the individuals being threatened left to go to a neighbor’s residence. The neighbor went outside to try to calm down the upset male but was unsuccessful, police said. A short time later, the male opened the neighbor’s door, entered the residence and slammed the door shut, police said.

Ashley Miller with the Michigan State Police. “So every day they have to come in and they’re just hoping to make it home safe that day.” Construction season is here and with that comes the workers who depend on your good driving habits to make it home safely. The Michigan Department of Transportation and Michigan State Police teamed up today to raise awareness for highway work zone safety. They were posted on an overpass over I75 in Cheboygan County May 14th to make sure drivers followed the speed limit posted. “We just want to educate the public that if you’re stopped for speed and cited in a construction zone, the fines are doubled,” Says Sgt. Miller. “And they also add additional points on your driving record. It’s very important not only for the motorists in the vehicle, but the workers. And that’s why it’s strictly enforced, is because we do not want anyone injured when they’re trying to fix the roads for Michigan”
