Fresh Air Barbecue inducted into Georgia Barbecue Hall of Fame
Fresh Air Barbecue was inducted into the Georgia Barbecue Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in Macon on Feb. 7. “For many generations of Georgians, Fresh Air is Georgia barbecue,” said Greg Sebastian, executive director of the Georgia Barbecue Hall of Fame, of the local favorite that has been serving its signature sandwiches, Brunswick stew and coleslaw for 96 years. Fresh Air was founded in 1929 by Jackson veterinarian Dr. Joel Watkins. Following his death in 1945, Fresh Air Barbecue was bought by the man who had been managing the restaurant for years, Butts County native George W. “Toots” Caston. He continued to work in the original restaurant every day until his death in 1996 at the age of 89. Fresh Air is now owned and operated by Caston’s grandsons, David and George Barber, and his great-grandson Charles Barber. They operate the Butts County restaurant and a sister location in Macon. Through generations of family owners, Fresh Air continues its tradition of serving hams rather than the more common shoulders and butts. Fresh Air smokes
