Hitchcockian Humor Comes to the Rubicon
“Hilarious Hitchcockery” describes The 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow’s farcical adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, which, in turn, was based on John Buchan’s 1915 novel. Richard Hannay is an average, work-a-day Joe who falls into accidental intrigue when he crosses paths with an apparent British spy. He picks up the mystery where she left off (after her murder) and finds himself hunted across the U.K. by a sinister secret society. Produced by the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, The 39 Steps is sure to thrill comedy and noir lovers alike.

Ventura Music Scene Feb 4 – Feb 17
I’m sorry to have to squash the rumors, but Mark Hartley has no intention of reopening the Watermark anytime soon though painstaking efforts have been made to restore the woodwork and opulence of its former heyday. The venue will continue as a rental space for special events just in case you’re interested. The rumors started after the Hartleys hosted an invite-only party musicians’ reunion on Tuesday, January 27, where up to 17 local musicians performed upstairs and downstairs. Those performing included Todd Hannigan, Shawn Jones, Sam Bolle, Ed Berghoff, Guy Martin, Alvino Bennett, Nick St. Nicolas, Mario Calire, Lois Mahalia, Katie Skene, and so many more, all of whom donated their time to play. For me, the highlight of the evening was when the band jammed with Nick St. Nicolas (Steppenwolf) and performed “Born to be Wild.”

Glorious Gershwin: ‘S’Wonderful’ tribute coming to Ventura, Ojai
In their time, the Gershwin brothers were among the hottest musical acts in America. The team of George (tunes) and Ira (lyrics) were behind such songs as “I Got Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Love Is Here to Stay.” They also embraced the theater with plays like “Porgy and Bess.” And then there’s George Gershwin’s great orchestral composition, “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Design Dish: Dom’s Taverna
Step inside one of Santa Barbara’s hottest new haunts. “My approach to design is rooted in storytelling and authenticity. I am drawn to spaces that feel layered and timeless, where historic elements and modern sensibilities coexist naturally,” says Zlata Nikonovskaya of Z&R Design. “I believe the most successful interiors invite people to gather, linger, and connect, while remaining grounded in context, craft, and the personal stories behind a space.” The firm applied this thinking when enlisted to transform historic 1928 building in Santa Barbara’s El Pueblo Viejo district into the current hotstpot—Dom’s Taverna. “The restaurant spans approximately 2,500 square feet, and preserving the integrity and character of the original architecture was central to the design approach,” Nikonovskaya notes.
