Hidden gun? No problem for Santa Maria police, video
With help from a furry companion, Santa Maria police officers seized a gun that a suspect was hiding inside a vehicle in the aftermath of a reported road rage incident. Dispatchers sent patrol officers to the area of Enos Drive and Broadway where a suspect had reportedly brandished a firearm during a road rage incident. Officers located the suspect’s vehicle and apprehended all of its occupants as they conducted an investigation, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Domestic Violence Cases Increase in Santa Barbara County
While the number of domestic violence cases increased by nearly 100 incidents throughout the unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County between 2013 and 2022, it really spiked in that same period in the City of Santa Maria. There, the number of cases jumped from 499 reported complaints in 2013 to 556 in 2022. Of those, the number of cases in which weapons were involved increased from 217 to 445. In 2022, the number in which strangulation and suffocation was involved was 50. Countywide, the numbers jumped from 1,695 to 1,788 in that same period. Cases in which weapons were involved increased from 370 to 918 in that same 10-year span. This information came out during recent budget discussions by the county supervisors on what they’re planning to spend for public safety.

Central Coast community trying to reduce garbage by giving recycling kits to residents
A Central Coast city is celebrating Earth Day by trying to make it a little easier for its residents to recycle. On Saturday, Santa Maria residents can pick up free recycling kits. They include a container for larger recyclables like cardboard, magazines, and cereal boxes. They’ll get a six-gallon container which fits under a sink and is ideal for bottles, cans, and glass.
