(KRON) — A 31-year-old Oakley man died after his car veered out of control, flipped, and struck a light pole on Monday. The Oakley Police Department said the driver was speeding, was not wearing a seatbelt, and had been drinking alcohol.

The driver was identified as Victor Alfonso, and his family was notified of his death, police said.

The wreck happened just before 12:30 a.m. on April 29 on Bethel Island Road near East Cypress Road. Contra Costa County Fire Department firefighters extracted Alfonso from his vehicle and alerted police.

When officers arrived at the scene, “it was discovered the driver … had been drinking alcoholic beverages and he was not wearing a seatbelt. Further investigation revealed Alfonso lost control of his vehicle at a high rate of speed and the vehicle went up onto a raised center median. The vehicle struck a light pole while sliding sideways across the center median causing major damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle,” the Oakley Police Department wrote.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to police.

Alfonso was pronounced deceased at a nearby hospital.
