Senior lineman 'lays it all on the line' for Quincy football in win
PEMBROKE — The wrestler-inspired belt fit as if it was tailored for Matt Powers . The Quincy High football team 's coaching staff awarded the senior defensive end and guard with the 'Player of the Game' honor after recovering a fumble, recording a sack, blocking a PAT kick and consistently invading the backfield in a 41-14 road win over Pembroke on Thursday, Oct. 29. Powers also led the trench unit that guided star senior running back Jonas Ala to sprint in 4 touchdown runs from 2, 3, 25 and 50 yards out. "He's physical and intense," head coach Ed DeWitt said of Powers. "He makes a bunch of plays and lays it all on the line. Sometimes you see him sprawling for tackles." Ala said Powers was "beating himself up in the locker room" and was self-critical of his first-half performance as Quincy carried a 14-6 lead into the break. Then, approximately 97 seconds into the third quarter, Powers recovered a fumble forced by senior Rory Williams and cradled it on the run into Pembroke territory. The Presidents outscored Pembroke by a 19-point margin in the second half. "It's not just me. It's not just Jonas. It's the whole team,"

Local unions rally behind new Brockton High School
BROCKTON — Brockton-area unions for the building trades threw their support behind building a new Brockton High in a high-energy meeting in Brockton High School's red cafeteria on Tuesday evening. "This is not the place to cut corners with cheap, untrained labor, but to build a top-tier school, we must use top-tier workforce, and that's us," said Shamika Baker, member of the electrical workers union and a 23-year Brockton resident, to applause. The meeting filled most of the cafeteria with burly workers, some coming straight from the job and wearing neon yellow shirts. It happened on the heels of Suffolk Construction being selected as the general contractor for the project. Asked by The Enterprise how Suffolk will choose builders, Executive Vice President Kevin Chamberland said in a statement the firm "will partner with organized labor who understand construction at scale and can deliver the project safely and on time." He also pointed out, "our track record for meeting and exceeding local participation goals is very strong." 'The union building trades aren't outsiders, coming in for a job' Steve Barry, president of an association of Brockton-area building trades unions, encouraged members to tell their families and neighbors to support the Brockton
