Stephen Hrncir – Calhoun Sandcrabs Football
Stephen Hrncir, head coach of Calhoun High School, is approaching his second year with optimism after a first season marked by significant changes and a successful finish with seven wins in their last eight games. For the 2026 season, the team is highlighted by the consistency of its coaching staff and the return of key players, especially in the backfield with quarterback Astron Sternado—who broke the school's passing record—and running backs Gunnar Martinez and Jojo Baldera. Although they must adjust to the loss of star quarterback Isaiah Cabales, the defense remains solid with players like Dane Spencer and sack specialists Jesus Hario and Gavin Reyes. Hrncir emphasizes the challenge of a new district lineup, which he considers comparable to the previous one, and a schedule that includes an important matchup against Cuero as a benchmark before the start of district competition. Finally, the coach underscores that the program's success is measured as much by on-field results as by the character development of its players and the strong support of the community known as "Sandcrab Nation."

Calhoun, Edna scrimmage supports coaches education foundation benevolence fund
PORT LAVACA, Texas — High school football scrimmages are designed to help coaches evaluate their teams and give players valuable game-like experience before the regular season begins. But Friday night’s scrimmage between Calhoun and Edna at Sandcrab Stadium carried a purpose that extended well beyond football. The schools participated in the annual “Our Day to Shine” initiative, a statewide effort that raises money for the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation (THSCEF) Benevolence Fund, which provides financial assistance to athletes, coaches and their families facing hardships. While there was no admission charge for the preseason matchup, youth football players and cheerleaders collected donations throughout the evening, giving fans an opportunity to support the fund and its mission. The THSCEF Benevolence Fund was created to help individuals and families across Texas during difficult times. According to the foundation, more than 1,441 schools have hosted “Our Day to Shine” scrimmages, raising over $1 million for the fund. The organization has distributed more than $820,000 in assistance to athletes and coaches experiencing hardships. The program encourages schools to dedicate a preseason scrimmage or spring game to the cause, turning an annual football tradition into an opportunity for community service and charitable giving.
