Nixon swears in new council member, discusses vehicle and software purchases
New Nixon City Council member Pat Dingler was sworn in to office Monday, April 15, by Nixon Municipal Judge Deidra Voigt. Dingler was chosen by the council on April 8 to serve out the remaining term of former Council member Melissa Pompa, who was hired to be the city’s new finance officer.

Texas Rangers investigating death of inmate at the DeWitt County jail
DEWITT COUNTY, Texas - On Sunday April 14 at 4:25 a.m. an inmate at the DeWitt County Jail was found unresponsive and pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Pct. 1. The inmate is identified as Milton Wilson Kaiser III, 34 of Yoakum. Authorities arrested Kaiser on April 12 at 8:50 p.m. accused of family violence causing bodily injury.
Lady Apaches clinch second in district with win over JFK
The Gonzales Lady Apaches closed out their final home game with a bang from their seniors in a 12-2 season sweep of the JFK Lady Rockets Tuesday, April 16 in five innings. The Lady Apaches celebrated senior night for four seniors (Sydney McCray, Haley Cantu, Kelly Breitschopf and Dakota Schmidt).
Baseball Game Recap: Nixon-Smiley Mustangs vs. Luling Eagles
Nixon-Smiley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat. They fell just short of the Luling Eagles by a score of 8-7. Nixon-Smiley was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Luling apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.
YHS Lady Bulldogs win softball game 8-1
After a handful of hits and one run over the first four innings, the Yoakum High School (YHS) Lady Bulldogs were sparked by a big hit by Olivia Fojt. With a 1-1 game in the bottom of the fifth, Fojt picked up an in-the-park home run and that started a snowball effect as the Lady Bulldogs had five straight hits afterwards, scoring a total of five runs and then got three hits to score two runs in the next inning for an 8-1 win on April 9 against Industrial at home.
Mustangs compete in area meet
The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs and Lady Mustangs track teams traveled to Altair, Texas for the Area Track Meet at Rice Consolidated High School Thursday, April 11. The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs finished in the top 10 in their respective events; senior Luke Moses clinched a spot in regional meet in Seguin (Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20) for his fourth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles.
