Naloxone available at regional housing properties in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The City of Northampton unveiled public access to NaloxBoxes at its regional housing properties.

The Northampton Department of Health and Human Services and Northampton Housing Authority are working with Hampshire HOPE to provide free and unrestricted access to Narcan. A ribbon cutting for the newly installed box at the Salvo House was held on Thursday. The ceremony was held to bring awareness to the life-saving tool.

Cara Leiper, Executive Director of the Northampton Housing Authority, shared “United in our commitment to saving lives, Northampton Housing Authority is proud to announce our partnership with Northampton’s Department of Health and Human Services to combat opioid overdoses. Together, we’re installing Naloxboxes inside and outside our properties, offering hope and support to those in need.”

Health Commissioner Merridith O’Leary states, “We’re grateful for the Housing Authority’s support in installing these Naloxboxes across their properties. In order to equitably address the impacts of opioid overdose in our communities, the DHHS is focused on providing low-barrier access to this medication. While Narcan itself is not new, these outdoor weatherproof boxes represent an innovation in how we can reach more community members, while continuing to reduce stigma.”
