Families help Garfield High School seniors host prom after fatal shooting of classmate
SEATTLE — As the students and staff at Garfield High School are mourning the loss of the junior student Amarr Murphy-Paine who was shot and killed Thursday in front of the school, others in the community are trying to help Garfield High School seniors still have a memorable night for their senior prom on Saturday.

It was a busy and memory-filled weekend for the Kent School District’s Class of 2024 high school graduates. Kent-Meridian, Kentridge, Kentwood and Kentlake graduates marched Saturday, June 8 through the accesso ShoWare Center in Kent. Kent Laboratory Academy, Kent Virtual Academy and iGrad had ceremonies Friday, June 7 at the Kent-Meridian gym. The Outreach Program (TOP) had its graduation June 6 at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center.

Seattle Public Schools postpones next step in school closures
The Seattle School Board has postponed for two weeks its vote on the district budget, following a series of public meetings on the district’s plan to close 20 K-5 schools. Seattle Public Schools heard from parents, teachers and students at four community meetings to share details about the plan for a system of “well-resourced schools.” The school board had been scheduled to vote on the budget on Monday, but the decision has been postponed until June 26. The district said on Monday that the meeting had been postponed so they had more time to incorporate public feedback and because of the shooting last week outside of Garfield High School.
UW announces Winter 2024 Dean’s List honorees
SEATTLE — Students from the Columbia Basin have been named to the Dean's List at the University of Washington for the Winter 2024 Quarter. To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must have completed at least 12 graded credits and have a grade point average of at least 3.50 out of 4. Students are notified that they have achieved this distinction when they receive their grades for the quarter.
