PREVIOUS: Part of Norfolk Avenue in Norfolk has been closed off due to a building collapse.
According to the City of Norfolk, the 700 block of W. Norfolk Avenue has been closed off “to ensure public safety” after a building collapsed on the block.
The building was owned by Northeast Community College, according to the Madison County Assessor’s Office. A spokesperson for the college told KCAU 9 that a contractor was getting ready for reconstruction when it collapsed and no one is believed to be injured. Read their full statement below.
The college was contacted by its general contractor that a portion of the building that was being prepared for reconstruction for the iHub had collapsed early this afternoon. We will be working with the City of Norfolk and our general contractor to make sure the premises are safe. We do not believe there were any injuries. That is all the information we have at this time.
The City did not give an estimated time as to when the closure will be lifted. On Facebook , the City said that emergency crews are on site working to resolve the issue.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area until clearance is given. The City will provide further details when more information is available.
