    Cpl. Lucas Watts named County Officer of the Year for SC

    OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate deputy who was shot in the line of duty was awarded the Governor’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for a county agency.

    Corporal Lucas Watts was shot in the line of duty on November 16, 2023, when attempting to stop a vehicle along Highway 11 near Mt. Pleasant Road.

    Watts was taken to the hospital for treatment, then was then taken to an out-of-state rehabilitation facility to begin the process of rehabilitation.

    On Thursday, Watts returned home.

    His wife, Haley, accepted the award for him at the luncheon on Tuesday. Along with the award, Lucas also will receive a check for $10,000.

    Watts was nominated by Sheriff Crenshaw through the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association.
