Somerset County Juneteenth Committee to Host Juneteenth Parade in Franklin

SOMERSET, NJ - The Somerset County Juneteenth Committee will celebrate Juneteenth with a Juneteenth parade in Franklin Township on June 15, according to a news release.
The public is invited to attend the free family-friendly parade and watch floats from several local and statewide organizations celebrating the Juneteenth Holiday.
The parade will start at 11am at Pine Grove Manor School on 130 Highland Avenue and proceed along the parade route up Highland Avenue, down Hamilton Street, and will end in Naaman Williams Park with a ceremony and block party to commemorate Juneteenth.
Civil Rights Activist Larry Hamm will be the Grand Marshall.
Hamm is the Chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress, Bishop George Searight, and Founder and Senior Pastor of the Abundant Life Family Worship Church in New Brunswick.
During the block party at Naaman Williams Park, entertainers will play steel drums, line dance, and perform musical and comedic performances. Food and retail vendors will be on-site and face painting and other activities for the family.

Though the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves was signed on January 1, 1863, enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay, Texas learned of their freedom from the Union Army, on June 19, 1865, well after President Lincoln signed the proclamation.
