    Former Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone announced a new facility for the Sheriff's Office's Animal Safe Haven, a home inside a jail for animals seized during investigations, in 2019.

    Nearly five years later there is no new facility despite funds being raised.

    Today in history

    Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

    • On this day in 1920, Harvard University’s president and four other administrators formed what became known as the Secret Court to investigate students suspected of being gay or associating with gay students. Several were expelled. The Secret Court did not come to light until documents were discovered in 2002.
    • In 1948, Thomas Wasson, American consul general in Jerusalem, was assassinated. His shooter was never found, and reports differed about whether the shooter was believed to be Arab or Israeli.
    • In 1962, a 12-year-old boy had his arm reattached by surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, the first successful reattachment of a severed limb. The boy eventually regained some strength in his arm and grip.
    • In 1995, the first version of the programming language Java was released.
    • In 2013, when a truck struck a support beam, a portion of a bridge over the Skagit River in northwestern Washington state collapsed into the river. Two vehicles fell into the water, but the three people inside were rescued.
    • In 2014, Elliot Rodger went on a killing spree, stabbing, shooting and ramming people with a vehicle in Isla Vista, California, killing six people and injuring more than a dozen before dying by suicide. He had distributed a manifesto explaining his actions as retribution for his sexual frustration.
