    Memorial Day ceremonies 4to be held in area

    Veterans organizations throughout Sawyer County will host Memorial Day events on Monday May 27 and Memorial Weekend.

    Listed by community, the events will be:

    Hayward

    American Legion Post 218 will host the following events:

    Saturday, May 25, 10 a.m.: Placing of U.S. flags on veterans’ graves at Greenwood Cemetery. Volunteers are welcome.

    Monday, May 27: Veterans will muster at the Veterans Community Center at 9 a.m. They along with the Hayward High School Band and local Scouts will march up Main Street at 10 a.m. to Shue’s Pond. A ceremony will be held at 10:15 a.m. at Shue’s in honor of the sailors lost at sea. Post 218 member Peter Cianci will speak about the history of the USS Forestal supercarrier.

    Participants will then travel to Greenwood Cemetery, where a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. in honor of service members who gave their lives on land. U.S. Air Force veteran and Post 218 member Russell Voight will speak about the crash of a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber near Stone Lake on Nov. 18, 1966, in which nine service members died.

    Veterans will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at noon at Water’s Edge Care Center. At 1 p.m., they will return to the Veterans Community Center.

    At 2 p.m., the Quilts of Valor Stitchers will present Quilts of Valor to three veterans at the Veterans Center.

    Lac Courte Oreilles

    At 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, a Memorial Day ceremony honoring Lac Courte Oreilles Ogichidaag Purple Heart recipients will be held at the LCO Veterans Park at the corner of Highways E and K, near the Kinnamon School Museum.

    The benediction will be given by Gary Quaderer Sr., U.S. Army. Master of Ceremony Rusty Barber, U.S. Army, will give the opening remarks, and the LCO Soldiers Drum will sing a welcome song.

    Vera Homesky, U.S. Air Force, will honor fallen soldiers. Family and friends will provide a tribute to Ogichidaag who were awarded a Purple Heart.

    LCO AmVets Post 1998 will conduct a formal flag-raising, a rifle salute and ‘Taps.’ The LCO Soldiers Drum will sing an honor song.

    Stephanie St. Germaine, U.S. Navy, will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.” Rusty Barber will give closing remarks and the LCO Soldiers Drum will provide a traveling song.

    LCO AmVets Post 1998 will conduct their annual White Clover Drive in front of Walmart on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 24-26.

    Winter area

    Winter American Legion Post 303 will conduct the following events on Memorial Day:

    8:15 a.m.: Baird Park Bridge on Highway G in Ojibwa, Lost at Sea ceremony.

    9:30 a.m.: Couderay Cemetery, Couderay.

    10 a.m.: Radisson Cemetery, Radisson.

    11 a.m.: Loretta-Draper cemetery.

    11:45: Winter Cemetery, Winter.

    A lunch will follow at American Legion Post 303, 6654 West Grove Street.

    Seeley

    Cable American Legion Post 487 will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. at Seeley Riverside Cemetery on Highway 63.

    Post 487 also will conduct a ceremony at the Civic Center in Drummond at 10 a.m. and at the Legion/Veterans Triangle on Highway M in Cable at 11 a.m.

    Stone Lake

    The Spooner veterans honor guard will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery on Highway BB south of Stone Lake.
