GHENT, WV (WVNS) — It’s a natural instinct to want to help a baby animal when you think it’s in trouble.

This snake in West Virginia plays dead when threatened

However, most fawns that seem abandoned are actually doing just fine. , most fawns you’ll find are not abandoned at all, according to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). They’ve been stashed in a safe space and their mother is nearby feeding.

The NWF also stated that the dappled pattern on the fawn’s back allows for better camouflage when hidden in the grass because it looks like spots of sunlight.

The only times it is acceptable to assist a lone fawn is if the fawn is clearly injured, or if it is next to a deceased adult doe. You still should not approach the fawn yourself, and instead call your local animal control office or wildlife center.

So next time you see a baby deer in distress, let it be, it is just waiting on mom.
