Dauphin County improves application access for $50 farmers market vouchers for low-income seniors

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — They can’t fix all the issues with the process — because some of the issues aren’t theirs to fix — but Dauphin County leaders said Thursday they would do what they could to ease the process of applying for annual $50 vouchers to be used at farmers markets.

Earlier in the week, the county issued a press release announcing details of the 2024 application process, and abc27 News reported what was in the announcement.

But alerted by a viewer to kinks in the process, abc27 reviewed it, hit the same roadblocks and contacted the county. Among the issues: The application was difficult to find on the website, contained contradictory information and has to be printed, even though not everyone has a printer. (The county’s Area Agency on Aging is automatically mailing this year’s application to people who qualified for the program last year.)

The bad news, explained county spokesperson Diane McNaughton: The county can’t change the form itself , because it’s a state form.

But McNaughton said the county would place a prominent link to the program on its homepage (by Thursday afternoon, it was already there) and would make paper copies of the application available at the county’s 11 senior centers .

Additionally, McNaughton said the Area Agency on Aging can also mail forms to anyone who needs one — just call the program’s dedicated phone number: 717-780-6209.

The $50 vouchers themselves will begin going out after June 1.
