SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — Next week, we could experience several consecutive days of triple-digit heat, which can severely impact potted plants.

The Tom Green County horticulture agent emphasizes the importance of maintaining consistent watering for landscapes and outdoor potted plants to help establish deeper, more drought-resistant root systems.

Allison Schwarz, an extension agent for horticulture, advised, “When it’s cooler like it has been, you can get by with watering maybe once or twice a week. But as it gets hot, you have to remember that potted plants have a smaller root system. They are restricted to the pot, which is exposed to sun and wind, so potted plants need to be watered more frequently than those in the ground.”

Schwarz also recommends mulching landscaping and potted plants to help reduce water evaporation.
