Showers, storms, and cooler temperatures are on the way

A storm system is currently approaching the state, bringing more upper level moisture. Similar to yesterday, showers and storms will develop over the high terrain but much of the rain in the valley’s and lower elevations will evaporate before reaching the ground. The only exception is far northeastern New Mexico where strong to severe storms are currently moving east off the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Large hail and damaging winds will be a concern through 8 PM.

Scattered showers/storms will continue this afternoon while a backdoor cold front arrives tonight. More shower and thunderstorm activity will spark up near the frontal boundary overnight, likely bringing Albuquerque and much of central New Mexico a wet start to the day. Widespread showers and storms will stick around through the early afternoon before pushing into east central and southeastern parts of the state. Severe storms are possible across the southeast later tomorrow afternoon and evening, once again mainly concerned about large hail and damaging wind gusts.

It will not be a rain all day scenario Thursday, but many locations have the chance to see multiple rounds of heavy downpours which could create flooding in low lying areas. Burn scar flash flooding will also be a concern today and into tomorrow afternoon as well. Temperatures will be 5-15° cooler Thursday afternoon before quickly rebounding into Friday as drier air returns. High pressure will build over the state this weekend, bringing the warmest weather so far this year on Sunday. Winds will return Sunday as well, getting even windier by early next week.
