New York EBT system to be down on Sunday. What you need to know

New York Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) users: plan to do your grocery shopping before Sunday this week.

The state's EBT system will be unavailable Sunday, May 19 between 12:01 a.m. and 11 a.m. to make a vendor switch, but the process could be shorter or last longer.

Here's what to know about the transition and how cardholders will be affected.

    How will I be affected?

If you're an EBT cardholder, you will not be able to access your EBT benefits during the changeover.

This includes access to food and cash purchases or cash withdrawals as well as access to the EBT toll-free customer service helpline, mobile app and online client portal.

Only New York EBT cardholders will be affected. EBT cardholders from other states will still be able to use their EBT card in New York without any interruptions.

What to know about the change

A vendor switch is necessary because the contract with the existing vendor is expiring and no further contract extensions are available.

After the EBT system becomes available again, you will still be able to use the same EBT card and PIN. You do not need to replace your EBT card or change your PIN.

However, the state encourages cardholders to change their PIN often to reduce your risk of fraudulent transactions and benefit theft.

The EBT customer service helpline will also remain the same — 1-888-328-6399 — but will not be available during the changeover.

Once the transition is complete, the ConnectEBT app and ConnectEBT online client portal will no longer be in use for EBT cardholders. You will need to download or access the new ebtEDGE app and client portal, which will allow cardholders to check their transactions and deposits, freeze and unfreeze their card and change their PIN.

Information about the new app and website will be posted on the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) when it becomes available.

How will I know if it's working again?

Check otda.ny.gov on Sunday to find out when the EBT system is back in working order.
