A juvenile female is dead and six others are facing several charges following a series of thefts from motor vehicles in two Calvert County subdivisions early Monday morning.

The names of those arrested and/or injured as a result of the incidents are not being released as of earlier this week, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

The youths, all from the Glen Burnie area, used three stolen vehicles while carrying out the alleged thefts. Officers pursued the vehicles, stopping two in Calvert while the other fled into Anne Arundel County.

It was on Route 2 in Harwood near the intersection of Birdsville Road that the vehicle being pursued by police collided with a pickup truck.

“The driver of the pickup truck was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” a Calvert sheriff’s office press release stated. “The three occupants of the fleeing car were also transported to an area hospital. The front-seat passenger, a juvenile female, was later pronounced deceased. The driver suffered critical injuries and the rear passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.”

A press release from the Maryland Attorney General’s Office stated its independent investigations division is probing the fatal crash. The investigation is ongoing.

State officials will be reviewing footage from the body worn cameras the Calvert deputies were wearing. The investigation could take well over the usual 20 days to complete, state investigators said.

Factors that could prolong the finalization of the report include completion of witness interviews, technical delays due to the need to shield civilian witnesses and allowing family members time to view the video before it is released to the public.

According to the Calvert sheriff’s office, shortly before 2 a.m. deputies responded to multiple calls of suspicious vehicles and individuals dressed in black masks breaking into vehicles in the Huntingtown area.

“A traffic stop was conducted in Neeld Estates,” the sheriff’s office press release stated.

During the stop vehicle occupants “bailed out leading to a foot pursuit. During the search for suspects, two additional vehicles entered the neighborhood at a high rate before fleeing in separate directors. Both vehicle fled on Plum Point Road, one heading toward Route 261 and the other fleeing towards Route 4. Calvert deputies apprehended two suspects following a bailout on Harbor Road in Chesapeake Beach,” according to the sheriff’s office.

An alert was issued for Neeld Estates residents during the search of the neighborhood of those who had bailed out of the vehicle. Residents were urged to stay in their homes and bring their pets inside.

During his report to the county commissioners and local department heads Tuesday morning, Calvert County Sheriff Ricky Cox (R) said it is possible to the driver of the pursued vehicle that crashed in Anne Arundel could be facing manslaughter charges due to the death of the female passenger.
