The Week Ahead (May 13): District softball, tennis, track & field highlight busy week

It's another busy week in high school sports, including district softball, tennis and track and field.

    Here's a quick look at what's ahead:

An Aurora-Field softball district championship game?

Five Portage County teams are currently alive in the OHSAA softball postseason. Four have advanced to the district level: Aurora, Mogadore, Rootstown and Streetsboro. Field still has to play its sectional final against Jefferson Area Monday after multiple rainouts.

There is the potential for No. 1 Aurora and No. 4 Field to play in back-to-back district semifinals Tuesday in Jefferson — and to potentially play each other in Thursday's district championship game.

No. 2 Mogadore is looking to repeat as a district champion, following last year's impressive regional run , with a district semifinal against No. 23 Grand Valley Monday and a potential title game occurring on Wednesday.

No. 10 Rootstown, led by Miami (Ohio) commit Shelbie Krieger , looks to upset No. 3 Columbiana in Tuesday's district semifinal at South Range while No. 15 Streetsboro finds itself facing 2023 state champion Tallmadge in the district semis after picking up only the second sectional title in program history with an upset of No. 13 Rocky River.

    Baseball postseason begins

The baseball tournament starts Monday with seven local teams playing first-round games, including an all-Portage County game between Crestwood and Mogadore. There are two more local first-round games Tuesday, featuring Aurora and Windham, while Field and Garfield received first-round byes and will begin their postseason journeys Wednesday.

The Falcons and G-Men, who made the deepest postseason runs in Portage County baseball last year with district wins at Bob Cene Park, both earned five seeds. There's a chance Field could see Roosevelt, which it was originally supposed to play at the David Starkey Memorial Tournament prior to a schedule swap, in a Wednesday sectional final.

Vincent Cannata advances to district tennis tournament

Aurora's Vincent Cannata is the lone area tennis player to advance to this week's district tournament.

Cannata, a senior who finished third at last week's sectional in Solon, will play Suburban American counterpart Finn Keenan of Revere in his district opener Thursday at Springside Athletic Club.

Aurora-Southeast to clash in lacrosse tournament

After playing a JV schedule throughout the year and proving quite competitive, Aurora's nascent boys lacrosse program will participate in this year's postseason.

The 20th-seeded Greenmen will open with No. 14 Southeast. When the two Portage County schools last met, Aurora beat Southeast's JV, 12-8. Now, the Greenmen will take on the Pirates' varsity Thursday.

In that same Region 6 bracket , No. 13 Roosevelt will travel to No. 6 Hawken Friday night.

All three area teams are a win away from advancing to the regional quarterfinals.

On the girls side, No. 19 Roosevelt opens with a home game against No. 20 Orange Tuesday night.

The league championships are over, with Crestwood (boys and girls), Garfield (boys and girls), Mogadore (girls) and Rootstown (boys) winning titles.

Now, the road to Dayton begins with area teams spread across a wide amount of district locations:

    Division I (Wednesday and Friday)

    Austintown District : Aurora, Roosevelt

    Division II (Thursday and Saturday)

    Bedford District : Southeast (girls)

Lakeview District : Crestwood, Ravenna, Streetsboro

Salem District : Field, Garfield (boys)

    Division III (Wednesday and Friday)

Cuyahoga Heights District : Garfield (girls)

Norwayne District : Mogadore, Rootstown, Southeast (boys), Windham

    Ravenna District : Waterloo

Roosevelt boys volleyball's state hopes run through Akron

The third-seeded Rough Riders are two games from state, thanks to last week's straight-set win over No. 6 Grafton Midview. Next up, Roosevelt visits No. 2 Hoban in the Region 6 semifinals Tuesday. A win could mean another Akron-based foe: top-seeded St. Vincent-St. Mary.
