The latest moves to be taken by Twin Cities-based Sun Country Airlines includes offering an app for the first time since 2017, as well as cutting back on some of its poorer-selling routes.

First reported by Thrifty Traveler , the smartphone app is expected to launch sometime in May for both Apple and Android users.

A spokesperson with Sun Country tells Bring Me The News , "Stay tuned on the app," sharing no further details.

The budget airline is one of the last major airlines to not offer an app, with established competitors including Delta, Spirit, United, Frontier, American, Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, Allegiant already offering one.I

Travelers have instead had to purchase tickets on Sun Country's website, with an option to download boarding passes on their phones, like Apple Wallet.

Sun Country also said it's expecting to make some schedule cuts as it faces pressure from its competitors, specifically Delta Air Lines.

According to Thrifty Traveler, Delta has recently attempted to match changes Sun Country is making in an effort to steal away customers in Minnesota, Detroit and Salt Lake City. Delta has added more routes and trips , as well as matching Sun Country's new route additions and offering more affordable economy seats .

On Tuesday , Sun Country reported its highest first quarter revenue on record of $311 million, up 5.9% in comparison to the same time in 2023.

However, it also reported a 9.6% loss in airfare revenue for the same quarter. In response, the airline is planning to reduce its schedule by cutting routes that don't sell as well as others. A spokesperson says changes aren't expected until later this year and won't affect the busy travel periods during Labor Day, MEA break and Thanksgiving.

More details regarding the app and schedule cuts will be provided at a later time.
