A contract recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation will replace a bridge on N.C. 210 over Long Creek that is more than 100 years old.

The bridge built in 1921, while safe, is no longer up to current design standards, according to a news release from Lauren Haviland, spokeswoman for NCDOT.

In April 2024, NCDOT awarded a $5 million contract to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy.

Construction on the new 205-foot bridge can begin as early as this spring and is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

Traffic will remain on the existing bridge, while the new bridge is being built next to it. Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures and please be aware of large trucks that will be frequently entering the highway throughout construction.
