Washington County Commissioners support Drug Court program

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — An innovative approach to treating drug offenders has been embraced by the Washington County Commission.

The Drug Court program allows first-time drug offenders to avoid prosecution if they agree to counseling, random drug testing and holding a job and/or enrolling in school.

The program has been adopted in many states and has been hailed as a success.

“In the long run,” said Washington County Drug Court Coordinator Jennifer Bricker in testimony before the county commission today, “these offenders are not only improving their lives but they are contributing to the community as a whole in a positive way.”

“this program really shows that a community can get behind people who are suffering from addiction and support them,” said Gray Barton with the Maryland Judiciary in his remarks of county commissioners.

Circuit Court Judge Brett R. Wilson also told the commissioners that the drug court was an effective tool with a positive impact on the community.

Washington County will hold a drug court graduation ceremony at the end of the month.
