WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – This could be the week House Republicans consider voting out their leader Speaker Mike Johnson but so far, the lawmaker promising to force that vote has not done so.

Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is leading the effort to oust Speaker Johnson.

The two met yesterday and said they’ll meet again Tuesday morning but it’s not entirely clear what the outcome of those talks may be.

Greene says it’s “about ways to move forward for a Republican controlled House of Representatives.”

Speaker Johnson called the meeting constructive.

“We’re going to keep this team together,” he said.

Greene argues Johnson is failing House Republicans for passing government funding and foreign aid packages with the help of Democrats.

Greene said last week she would call for a motion to remove the speaker this week.

“I have been patient, I have been diligent, I have been steady, and I have been focused on the facts, and none of that has changed,” she said.

Johnson said he gets her frustration, but Republicans’ razor-thin majority means they can’t get everything they want.

“What we do in a scenario like this, which is almost unprecedented in the history of Congress, is we move the ball forward as far as we can on the field,” Johnson said.

If Greene does call for a vote, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats will step in to save Johnson.

“We’ve made clear. This is a vote of conscience,” said Jeffries.

Only two other Republicans have signed on to Greene’s motion to remove Johnson.
