Bogey’s Pub & Grille opens at Meadowlake Golf Club

PLAIN TWP. − Phil Barr, owner of Meadowlake Golf & Swim Club , knew he didn't have a lot of time to transform the former Tugboat's Pub after it closed March 31.

At that point, Barr was tossing around ideas for a replacement, but had no firm plans. But, with the golf season hitting its stride in May, he had a deadline.

The new restaurant at the site, called Bogey's Pub & Grille, has opened at Meadowlake, 1211 39th St. NE.

Barr hired Shawn Steele, a golfer at Meadowlake who also had known Barr, as his general manager. Steele asked Barr if he could help create something new after spending more than five years working both front and back of house at Roosters.

Together, Barr said, they have given Bogey’s Pub & Grille a refreshed menu and some creative ideas for future events.

Between the closing of Tugboat's and the April 22 opening of Bogey's, the kitchen underwent a three-week complete renovation. “The original kitchen has been the same since 1973,” Barr said. “We scrubbed and painted. We removed the formica counter tops and wood and replaced them in the kitchen with stainless steel. We added a grill and a new flat top.” Steele, with a hint of sarcasm, said it was three fun weeks.

Meadowlake Golf & Swim sits on a former dairy farm. Barr’s grandfather purchased the 55 acres in 1913, and beginning in 1918, Barr's family was fully immersed in the dairy business, pasteurization, bottling and delivering milk throughout Stark County. Random H. Barr Elementary School is named for Phil Barr’s grandfather, who was community-minded and passionate about education.

In 1963, Barr’s dad converted the dairy farm to a golf course, and tennis courts and a pool were among renovations in 1973. Originally private, it opened to the public in 1978. The pool is private.

The menu at the newly opened Bogey’s Pub & Grille is perfect for those taking advantage of golf or swimming on the property, but it too is open to the public for lunch and dinner and everything in between. Bogey’s is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Food options include burgers, sandwiches and wings with a wide variety of sauces. Steele said the chicken and beef are always fresh, not frozen. Salads and creative appetizers are also available, perfect for golfers at the turn. I found the Irish Spring Rolls ($7.99) a creative twist on corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss, rolled up in wonton wrappers, deep fried and served with thousand island dressing.

I chatted with first time Bogey’s patrons who were sitting at the bar finishing up lunch after golfing. Cheryl and Mike McAllister enjoyed their food. Cheryl McAllister had hand-breaded chicken tenders with fries. “The portion was so generous, there’s enough here to take home for happy hour later today,” she said. Mike McAllister had a mushroom Swiss burger with fries, and said it was cooked perfectly. Their friends, Jean Madden and Mike Lanzer, said they enjoyed their chicken quesadilla and club sub.
