HILLSDALE — On May 18, there will be a free Community Baby Shower open to all Hillsdale County residents with a child under 12 months or who are expecting.

The event is put on by the Hillsdale County Great Start Collaborative and Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness (CAPA).

“This is a great event with many local organizations that provide great information for expecting and new parents all in one location,” said Christie Campbell, executive director of CAPA. “Parenting is hard. This offers some great opportunities for parents to learn what there is to offer in our community to help them.”

The event starts at 9 a.m. in the Hillsdale High School gym and will include giveaways, learning opportunities, door prizes, lunch for all registered participants.

“This event is Intended to be an opportunity for families to learn about important topics related to pregnancy and infant care and to explore community agencies providing valuable services for expecting and new parents,” said Stefanie Rathburn, director at the Great Start Collaborative.

There are 19 community agencies and businesses already planning to attend the event.

Campbell said CAPA is excited to host the event with Great Start.

“This is our second time co-sponsoring with the Great Start Collaborative, and we are so thankful we can do so,” she said. “We want to see every child grow up happy, healthy, and safe!”

Portable playpens will be given to the first 75 registered families to attend, and the first 35 dads to arrive will receive a special goodie gift bag.

“Children are welcome to attend,” Rathburn said, “But if parents want to be able to focus on the offerings and find their own child care, they will be offered an extra gift!

There are some new activities this year, including a photo booth, massages and keynote presentations.

Campbell said she hopes to see lots of community members in attendance.

“This is a great opportunity to see what all the organizations have to offer to new parents in our community,” she said. “They say, ‘it takes a village,’ and it really does to raise children. This event will allow new parents in our community to know they are not alone, and we will be able to provide them with information to help them raise happy, healthy, and safe children.”
