MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) – May 5-11 marks Hurricane Preparedness Week. On Monday, Carteret County hosted an expo to get you prepared.

Several vendors like the National Weather Service were there to answer questions and show people what to do before hurricane season starts on June 1. Emergency management crews and the NWS said they are also using this week to get everything ready to go.

“I know it’s May, but be prepared now,” said Erik Heden, a warning coordination meteorologist for the NWS. “If you’re prepared and you have a plan, I have enough food, water, medicine for seven days. I’m going to stay put and now that part of the plan is complete.

“Then you should also have a plan to leave the area. So if decisions are made that you want to evacuate, you don’t have to think about where you should go. I have pets and these are the hotels that take them. I’ve got friends in Maryland. I got friends in South Carolina. I’m going to go opposite of the storm. So plan today so that when the storm happens, you know exactly what to do.”

You can visit the state’s website for more information about how you can be ready. Watch the video above for more tips.
