KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Do you know your blood pressure numbers?

Officials with the Knox County Health Department want to remind you that you should be monitoring your blood pressure regularly.

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month.

High blood pressure, if left untreated, can lead to serious health issues like heart disease and even stroke.

Knox County Health Department Nurse Susan Yochum said while high blood pressure is a prominent danger for residents in Indiana and the Midwest, it is a controllable issue if regularly checked.

“It’s very controllable in most cases, so we’re encouraging people this month to know what their blood pressure numbers are,” Yochum said. “Make sure that they are treated appropriately and effectively and one of the things you can do is you can always come by the Knox County Health Department during our office hours for a free blood pressure check.”

Yochum added that while medication is the most effective treatment for high blood pressure, there are other ways to control it such as losing weight, exercising, and eating a good diet that is low in sodium.
