MORRISTOWN, NJ - Approximately 216 pounds of unwanted, unused or expired medications were collected during the 2024 Operation Take Back last weekend.

The goal is to encourage the public to anonymously turn over unused, unwanted, or expired prescription medicine for proper disposal. Morris County residents dropped off 59 pounds at ShopRite of Greater Morristown, 87 pounds at Stop and Shop of Morris Plains and 70 pounds at Acme of Randolph, said the sheriff's office.

All drugs collected at the sites were weighed and properly destroyed by law enforcement officials.

Operation Take Back is a semi-annual event coordinated nationally by the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in which law enforcement agencies at the state, county, and municipal level work collectively to host Operation Take Back across the nation.

“Year after year, Operation Take Back in Morris County has consistently yielded hundreds of pounds of expired and unused medications. This demonstrates just how much the community relies on this service. Our residents are active participants in combatting prescription drug misuse. We thank our law enforcement and commercial partners for making this annual event a great success", said Prosecutor Carroll and Sheriff Gannon.

Residents who were unable to attend the past weekend, may drop off medication at permanent drop boxes throughout the county. The list of permanent boxes are listed at http://safehealthymorris.org/dropbox
