Governor Laura Kelly has issued a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in honor of retired Kansas Supreme Court judge Fred Six. Six died April 27 at 95.

Justice Six served our state honorably during his tenure on the Kansas Supreme Court,” says Governor Laura Kelly in a news release. “On behalf of the State of Kansas, I thank him for his dedication, expertise, and fairness. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones.”

Six was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court in 1988 by Governor Mike Hayden, who had previously appointed Six to the Kansas Court of Appeals the year before. Six retired in 2003, and was succeeded by Justice Marla Luckert.

Justice Six was a dedicated public servant of the highest order. As a justice, he will be remembered for his brilliant legal mind, his principled decision-making, his clear writing, and his courtesy, respect, and fairness to all. As a person, he was kind, insatiably curious, genuinely caring, and famous for his bowties. He lived a deep and rich life of service, friendship, learning, and family, and is held in the highest professional and personal esteem by his colleagues and friends. Our hearts are with his family who have lost him and his beloved wife within a span of 10 days .

Justice Six is the father of former Kansas Attorney General Stephen Six who is now a professor of law at the University of Kansas.
