HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – It’s no secret that police officers have a tough job. It is a job that is significantly more dangerous than many other lines of work.

Because of this, law enforcement agencies offer high enough incentives to attract and retain officers, but this varies from state to state.

WalletHub conducted a study to determine where all 50 states including the District of Columbia ranked and determined that Kentucky was ranked as the eighth worst at 44th.

Indiana was mid-pack at 23rd and Illinois was ranked 2nd best.

    • Kentucky – 44th
      • Opportunity & competition – 46th
      • Law enforcement training requirements – 29th
      • Job hazards & protections – 38th
    • Indiana – 23rd
      • Opportunity & competition – 39th
      • Law enforcement training requirements – 14th
      • Job hazards & protections – 31st
    • Illinois – 2nd
      • Opportunity & competition – 4th
      • Law enforcement training requirements – 6th

To get an overall score, WalletHub compared the states including DC across 30 metrics ranging from median income to police deaths for every 1,000 officers to state and local spending on police.
