FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The pilot and passenger killed in a plane crash in Fluvanna County Sunday morning have been identified by Virginia State Police.

Authorities said the pilot, 63-year-old John W. Latham, of Prince William County, and the passenger, 73-year-old Niiben C. A. Ayivorh, of Fairfax County were both killed in the crash.

This comes after the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 8:54 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, from residents in the 200 block of Miles Jackson Road about seeing a low-flying plane, then hearing what sounded like an explosion.

When authorities arrived, they found a plane on fire in a densely wooded area off of Miles Jackson Road.

The plane was a privately-owned twin-engine 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A, according to police.

Police said the plane left the Manassas Regional Airport Sunday morning and was flying to the Georgetown County Airport in South Carolina. There was light rain at the time of the crash.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash.
