    Tree falls along I-40 in Smith County

    SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A fallen tree blocked some lanes of Interstate 40 overnight in Smith County.

    The Smith County Rescue Squad said the downed tree was reported in the westbound lanes of I-40 near mile marker 263 around midnight on Monday, May 6.

    According to emergency personnel, several vehicles hit the tree and drove through the treetop before coming to a stop.

    The downed tree scattered debris across the interstate, which resulted in crews completely blocking the right lane. However, only non-life-threatening injuries were reported, officials said.

    Just before 1 a.m., the Smith County Rescue Squad said the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) had been called to the scene to remove the tree.

    TDOT reported the roadway reopened at approximately 4:12 a.m. on Monday, May 6. No other information was immediately released.
