HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — We rely on first responders to keep us safe but many of us do not understand the tools and techniques they use to do that.

A local 911 center aimed to change that.

It’s not every day you get to see emergency responders and their equipment. That’s what dozens of people got to experience Saturday afternoon for a public safety center open house in Monroe County.

“Public Safety Day is an opportunity for all of our first responders, as well as some of our other partners in response and recovery to come together and interact with the community to show our overall resilience within the community,” explained Mary Ellen Keegan the director of emergency management in Monroe County.

Booths were set up around the entire Monroe County Emergency Management Center.

Medical professionals were teaching first-aid techniques, showcasing rescue dogs, and how to put out kitchen fires with extinguishers.

“We love seeing the kids interacting, especially when their eyes light up when the various fire props go off,” said Keegan.

Attendees had the opportunity to get an up close and personal look at the tools used by law enforcement.

“This is our eye-core surveillance robot will use that to send in the houses. They can look for bad guys before we have to send an operator in,” added Patrol Cpl. Derek Chaffee ar Pocono Mountain Regional Police.

It was a fun-filled day for everyone, especially with first responders showing off their crime-fighting devices.

“We love doing it, the kids and adults love it too, they love the technology of it. It’s just a lot of fun to play with,” continued Cpl. Chaffee.
