Bicyclist killed in Tangipahoa Parish crash

A 67-year-old Ponchatoula man is dead after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car.

Louisiana State Police Troop L says it happened just before 9:30 p.m. Friday on LA 445 near Stepp Road.

"The initial investigation revealed that William Edwards Jr. was on a bicycle attempting to cross LA Hwy 445. At the same time, a 2003 Toyota Camry was northbound on LA Hwy 445," said Trooper First Class William Huggins. "For reasons still under investigation, the bicycle traveled into the northbound lane of LA Hwy 445, directly into the path of the Toyota and was struck by the Toyota."

First responders pronounced Edwards dead on the scene.

The driver of the Toyota was uninjured.

Toxicology samples were collected for analysis as matter of routine.

The crash remains under investigation.
