Saturday, May 4: Kicking off a wet and stormy pattern

    By Matt Hefner,

Well, I hope you are a fan of wet weather because we are looking under the gun for a near-daily chance of rain and thunderstorms for the next 5 days. Both an active and soggy pattern will be set up.

The first round of rain is set to kick off this morning and potentially linger into the afternoon. Rain can be heavy, however, it won’t last for long. The totals for today will fall on the lighter side of things. Roughly 0.1-0.25″ for most places.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop, however, I have no major concerns about severe weather. With that being said, I can’t rule out the chance of hail and gusty winds as storms surge through.

We’ll still be under the risk of scattered showers for the late afternoon until clouds and moisture start to push out of the area in the evening. If you have plans for Saturday night, keep them. This round of rain will be wrapping up by then.

The next wave of rain is set to arrive on Sunday. The risk of wet weather increased for the morning hour, yet I expected the bulk of rainfall to be arriving in the afternoon. Thankfully, severe weather isn’t in my forecast for Sunday. We should be experiencing a steady and more widespread rain.

In total, the majority of people should see somewhere between 0.5 – 1″ of rain this weekend.

I like our chances to stay dry on Monday. The chance of rain is still on the table, however, things have been trending drier more recently. Another wave of rain and thunderstorms is set to arrive Monday night.

Right now I have concerns about severe weather for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Strong upper atmospheric winds combined with high levels of instability have me worried about the potential for large hail and tornado activity to develop. I’ll be keeping an eye on how things progress and provide more updates as things get closer.
