OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is in the process of widening a busy roadway in Daviess county. Construction crews are already finishing preparation work for the project. For the next week, drivers will experience lane closures as they complete work on traffic signals.

Officials say they don’t have an exact timeline on the completion date, but Highway 54 will soon go from a four-lane highway to six lanes.

They’ll also construct a median barrier to prevent left turn-ins and help with traffic control in the area.

The district’s Chief Engineer Deneatra Henderson says this will allow for more future economic growth.

Twenty radar sensors will go up as crew create lane restrictions at multiple intersections through May 10.

Officials say that deadline is weather permitting.

As crews get further into the construction project, the sensors will help control traffic at the US 60 Eastbound Exit near Highland pointe all the way through Commonwealth Court.

They also have work to do on surrounding utilities.

“We’re working with different utility agencies and subcontractors to develop a plan to relocate those utilities outside of our construction limits. After that, you’ll see some heavier roadway construction activities begin,” says Henderson, District two’s Chief Engineer.

Officials say over 32,000 vehicles travel the busy stretch of highway daily.
