Federal funds headed to Gates County

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday (April 29) North Carolina First District Congressman Don Davis announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded the Economic Improvement Council and Gateway Community Health Centers with grant funding to help promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, youth, individuals and communities through new infrastructure and Head Start programs.

“Rural communities lack the health funding they need to succeed,” said Congressman Don Davis. “These grants provide the necessary programming and resources to modernize our health systems for children and families. Head Start provides the next generation with the skills they need to live the American dream in eastern North Carolina, and these vital federal funds will only help make the future for our children that much brighter.”

HHS approved $2,596,317 for the Economic Improvement Council Inc. and $1,394,305 for Gateway Community Health Centers.

Based in Edenton, the EIC assists residents in Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington counties. Its programs include Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, Early Head Start, Head Start, Community Service Block Grants, and Weatherization Assistance.

Gateway Community Health Centers provide medical care to members of the local community through clinics in Gatesville and Tyner. The healthcare organization serves vulnerable populations, including migrant workers, adolescents, and low income populations.
