    Viral tornado footage is from prior storms, not recent Nebraska tornado | Fact check

    The claim: Video shows a tornado in Nebraska on April 26

    An April 29 Facebook video ( direct link, archive link ) shows a series of clips of tornadoes causing damage.

    “Tornado in Nebraska US, April 26th, 2024,” reads on-screen text included in the post.

    “The following videos of the tornado that occurred in recent days are circulating on social media," reads the post's caption in Spanish.

    The post was shared more than 3,600 times in four days.

    The video is a mashup of footage from prior tornadoes, not recent footage from Nebraska.

    Video shows old clips from Florida, Michigan, elsewhere

    Over the weekend of April 26, a series of tornadoes swept through the Midwest, causing widespread damage in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa and killing at least six people . Videos and photos show the devastation caused by the tornadoes.

    But the video in the post doesn't come from this string of storms. It's a compilation of footage that includes at least six video clips of prior tornados or thunderstorms.

    Fact check : V iral image is from 2022, not recent Texas tornado

    • The first clip in the video shows a tornado near houses and a grain silo. It has been o nline since at least July 2023 .
    • The second clip shows lightning hitting a truck on a roadway in Tampa, Florida. USA TODAY published the video in July 2022 .
    • The next video clip, which has been online since at least 2022 , shows a tornado lifting objects into the air and onto a street amid passing cars in Gaylord, Michigan, according to the original caption.
    • A short clip shows objects being blown past cars on a street. The video has been online since at least May 2023 , and the description says it was from a storm in Kansas City, Missouri.
    • A clip showing high winds destroying buildings on a farm is from July 2023, according to a Washington Post story that included the footage.
    • A video showing a tornado funnel passing by a building was posted on TikTok in July 2023. The caption places the footage in Ottawa, Canada.

    The social media user provided no evidence the footage was recent when contacted by USA TODAY
