Gov. Phil Murphy believes former inmates should be allowed to serve on juries in New Jersey.

Murphy made his case Thursday at the New Jersey Institute For Social Justice’s 25th anniversary.

The law now disqualifies individuals to serve on a jury if they've been convicted of a crime in federal or superior court.

Murphy said changing this law defends the integrity of the state's criminal justice system.

“Restoring the right to perform a fundamental civic duty is not just about ending an injustice that continues to plague our formerly incarcerated neighbors — it is also about defending the integrity of our democracy, our criminal justice system, and the rule of law,” Murphy posted on X.
