EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Whether you’re an inexperienced angler or a veteran, everyone can find out what freshwater fish are biting this weekend.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management ( DEM ) announced it is holding the state’s annual free freshwater fishing weekend from May 4-5.

Both Rhode Islanders and visitors can fish for all freshwater species this weekend with no license necessary.

Licenses normally cost $21 for residents and $38 for nonresidents, and trout conservation stamps cost around $5.50.

The DEM said the program was established in 1995 and encourages people to check out local freshwater fishing areas.

Boating and size regulations will still apply this weekend with the daily creel and possession limit for trout remaining at five.

Anglers who catch a golden rainbow trout before May 6 will be eligible to receive a golden trout pin by taking a picture of the catch and emailing it to dem.fishri@dem.ri.gov .
