STEVENSVILLE — “Folks don’t realize the amount of effort that goes into the planning for these projects. We are always working to assess the public’s needs and prepare these projects for eventual execution,” MDOT Director of Communications Paul Milton said in response to the ongoing state highway projects in Queen Anne’s County. “We work in conjunction with local and federal resources to ensure the plans are aligned and to obtain the budget necessary to complete the work — it’s a very intricate process the public is not always aware of.”

The open house held recently on Kent Island was intended to show concepts for various points along Route 18 between Castle Marina roundabout and the Narrows on the westernmost side of Kent Island. The event high-lighted the commitment from state and local government alike to address local issues Kent Island residents deal with on a week to week basis.

More information on the project can be found via the state’s QR code. The website also includes an updated survey to provide opportunity for those not able to attend an avenue to weigh in on the project and provide their insights. The planning phase of the project is scheduled to run through the end of Summer 2024. Charlie Gischlar, deputy director of communications at MDOT says, “This planning is a crucial piece of the puzzle. When funds become available, whether from a Federal Grant or other source, if this part is done, we are able to move forward at a much quicker pace.”

Added Milton,”It’s important we hear from the public on these issues, and these events are a critical aspect of the communications process — here on the Eastern Shore we have a better response to these in-person open houses as opposed to the western shore where the response is better for a virtual meeting.”
